Like most urban cities, Houston is made up of unique districts and neighborhoods that add to the richness of the city’s diverse culture. Each neighborhood and district has adopted a signature moniker that speaks volumes about their individuality and offerings to the greater Houston community. The up and coming neighborhood east of downtown is Houston’s live music and entertainment destination, and is quickly becoming a place to be. This recently revitalized gem boasts historic warehouse buildings, artist studios, loft living, residential development, restaurants, clubs and bars. An eclectic mix of urbanites, artists and budding entrepreneurs are drawn to this area for its originality, superior location and historical value.
Making History
History is what you make it and we want your help. That’s why we are currently accepting suggestions for naming this vibrant district. The neighborhood is defined as the triangle east of downtown created between the intersections 1-45, US-59 and the railroad. East Downtown offers some of the most spectacular views of the Houston skyline and unmatched access to the Downtown Business District, the East End and the historic Third Ward. Attractions such as Minute Maid Park, Discovery Green Park, the expanded George R. Brown Convention Center, and the Toyota Center are just blocks away.
Why Name the District?
The naming process will allow local Houstonians to give the district a unique identity that preserves the heart and soul of its community while making its distinct place among the established downtown districts. This is an opportunity for Houstonians to provide creative suggestions for naming the neighborhoods we live, work and play in. Other metropolitan areas have come to be famous for their districts such as Deep Ellum in Dallas, LoDo in Denver and the Pearl District in Portland. We hope to draw attention to the varying districts, cultures and offerings of our city by capturing its unique essence.
How Do I Submit My Suggestion?
Suggest as many names as you would like via e-mail at entry@namethedistrict.com. All submissions must be received by May 15th, 2008. Each suggestion will be reviewed, and we will announce the winning name on the web site as well as in a press release.*
